Nerve Conduction Study – (NCS) & (EMG) – Electromyography
What is an NCS / EMG Test?
Electrodiagnostic medicine is the study of diseases of nerves and muscles. Your doctor has recommended an Nerve test and EMG to determine if your muscles and nerves are working properly.
NCS (Nerve Conduction Study)
A diagnostic test used to measure the quality and speed of your nerve signals as they travel to and from your muscles.
EMG (Electromyogram)
A diagnostic test used to measure the electrical activity produced by muscle fibers. In other words, this is a test to determine if your muscles are responding correctly.
The NCS and EMG are two separate tests; however Dr. Anden will complete these together. The testing time will take about 45 – 60 minutes.
The NCS (nerve conduction study) is a test used to test your nerves to determine if your nerve signals are complete or damages. This is done by applying electrical shocks to the nerve and recording how the nerve works. These shocks cause a quick, mild tingling sensation. Your doctor will likely test several nerves.
The EMG (electromyography) is a test used to test your muscle response to determine if your muscles are responding correctly. This test is done by poking a small, thin needle into the muscle to see if there are any abnormalities in the response. A new sterile needle is used for each patient. There may be a small amount of pain when the needle is poked through the skin, but that quickly subsides. During the test, Dr. Anden will hear, as well as, see how your muscles and nerves area reacting.
Why am I being referred for this test?
You are being referred for testing because you are having symptoms relating to possible nerve or muscle damage.
These symptoms can include numbness, tingling, burning, cramping weakness, or other strange sensations in your upper or lower extremities (arms, hands, fingers, legs, feet, or toes).
How should I prepare for this test?
Please do not wear any lotion or oils on the location that we are testing that day.
You may eat and drink normally prior to the test and you may take all medications normally.
There will be NO lasting side effects, so you are able to drive yourself and return to work afterwards.
When do I get my results?
Dr. Anden will go over the results with you before you leave our office. Her staff will fax the Report and Consult to your referring doctor the following day.
If you need to be referred to another specialist, she will write a referral.
If there is treatment that Dr. Anden can recommend, she can go over your options.
